How to set up a Moxa NPort device with NPort Administrator

This guide explains step by step how to connect and configure a Moxa NPort device using the NPort Administrator software. The NPort device acts as a serial to Ethernet solution, enabling remote control of serial devices over a network.
Step 1: Connect the hardware
- Connect the Moxa NPort device to your computer using an Ethernet cable.
- Make sure the NPort device is connected to power and that the status lights indicate it is on.
Step 2: Install NPort Administrator
- Download the NPort Administrator software from Moxa's official website.
- Select the correct version for your operating system.
- Follow the installation guide to install the software.

Step 3: Start NPort Administrator
- Open NPort Administrator by clicking the icon on your desktop or finding it in the Start menu.
Step 4: Discover the NPort device
- Click Search in NPort Administrator to search for connected devices.
- The software will automatically find all NPort devices on your network.
- Wait for the search to complete and confirm that your NPort device appears in the list.
Step 5: Configure the IP address
- Select your NPort device from the list.

Click Unlock to unlock the device for configuration.
- Enter the password moxa (default password).

Right-click the device and select Configure.
- Go to the Network tab in the configuration window.
- Tick Modify next to the fields you want to change.

Enter the desired IP address, for example 192.168.10.30.
- Click OK to save the changes and wait for the configuration to update.
Step 6: Set up COM mapping
- Go to the COM Mapping menu in NPort Administrator.
- Click Add to add a new COM port mapping.

Tick the NPort device you want to set up and click OK.
- Select the desired COM port number or use the default settings.
- Click Apply to save the settings.

Confirm any messages that appear and wait for the configuration to complete.
Step 7: Complete the setup
- The Moxa NPort device is now successfully set up with the specified IP address and is ready to use.
- You can now use the device to communicate with serial devices over the network.
- If you experience problems, check the network settings and repeat the steps above.

Tip:
If you cannot find the NPort device in the search, check that the device and your computer are on the same network segment. The default IP address for Moxa NPort devices is 192.168.127.254. If the device is new or has been reset, try connecting directly to this IP address.
