How to Disable Windows 10 Automatic Logoff for Inactivity Using secpol.msc
Follow the steps below to prevent Windows 10 from automatically logging off inactive users through the Local Security Policy Editor (secpol.msc):
Step-by-Step Guide
- Open the Local Security Policy Editor
Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box, type secpol.msc, and press Enter. This will launch the Local Security Policy editor.
- Navigate to Local Policies
In the left-hand panel, expand Local Policies and then select Security Options.
- Find and Configure the Interactive Logon Settings
Scroll down to locate the policy setting called Interactive logon: Machine inactivity limit. Double-click to open it.
- Set the Inactivity Timeout
In the policy window, you will see a field to specify the inactivity time in seconds. By default, this is usually set to 900 seconds (15 minutes).
To disable automatic logoff, set the value to 0, or adjust it to your desired time limit in seconds.
- Apply the Changes
Click Apply and then OK to save your changes.
- Restart or Log Off
For the changes to take effect, either restart your computer or log off and log back in.
Additional Information
Disabling the inactivity timeout prevents Windows from automatically logging off users when no activity is detected for a set period. This can be useful in situations where prolonged inactivity is common, but security is not a major concern.
If you wish to re-enable the timeout in the future, simply repeat the steps and set the Machine inactivity limit to a desired timeout value in seconds.
Troubleshooting
- If you cannot find
secpol.mscon your system, it is likely because you are using a Windows 10 Home edition, which does not include the Local Security Policy editor. Consider upgrading to Windows 10 Pro or use alternative methods like editing the registry. - Ensure you have administrative privileges to make these changes in the Local Security Policy editor.
